13 Days of Spinechillers Day 3 - The Fall of the House of Usher

Alexander Finbow - Friday, January 14, 2011
Day 3 is here, and we welcome the master Edgar Allan Poe to The 13 Days of Spinechillers. And what a story he has for us today, ladies and gentlemen we present one of his finest tales, the gothic horror masterpiece: The Fall of The House of Usher.

You may have read the text or perhaps watched one of the movie adaptations, like Roger Corman's 1960 film starring Vincent Price, or you may be new to this tale of impending doom. Whichever way, if you haven't heard Doug Bradley reading Poe's famous words, then you haven't experienced the definitive adaptation and owe it to yourself to immerse yourself in the world of Usher.

The story takes place in the crumbling ancestral home of Roderick Usher as the narrator is called upon to help his friend from childhood. I won't say any more as the story deserves to be discovered and I don't want to preempt it for those new to tale. I'll leave the final words to Doug Bradley, whose voice leads us through Poe's prose with his reassuringly confident and assured delivery.

'It is a brilliant tour de force. And once it’s in your head, it won’t leave in a hurry. The story also takes almost every element of the Gothic, mixes it with almost every obsessional notion in Poe’s universe and re-arranges all these elements into something new and unforgettable.
The Fall Of The House Of Usher
was first published in 1839 in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine. Poe was just 30, a young man. Yet already entering the final decade of his life. He slightly revised the story for his first collection Tales Of The Grotesque And Arabesque published the following year.'

The story is presented in two parts. Part 1 is 27 minutes long and Part 2 runs to 25 minutes. The cover art is included with the download, and the audio is high quality 320kbps MP3.

Part 1 is available here for just 99 cents, and part 2 here, also only 99 cents.

We hope you enjoy this masterpiece from Poe, it's not the last time he'll appear in The 13 Days of Spinechillers so check back with us to find out which tale it will be. Tomorrow we'll bring you day 4 and a very famous story indeed...
