Renegade Arts Entertainment is pleased to announce a new partnership with Bedside Press

Sean Tonelli - Thursday, November 09, 2017

Renegade Arts Entertainment is pleased to announce a new partnership with Bedside Press.

Under this new agreement, Renegade Arts Entertainment will represent Bedside Press for book trade distribution through their existing partners: Publishers Group Canada (Canada - PGC is part of Raincoast Books), Turnaround UK (Europe) and Diamond Comic Distribution (Direct Market) beginning January 1, 2018 and additional distributors as they are added. Effectively, Bedside Press will become a Renegade imprint while remaining editorially independent and under the ownership of Hope Nicholson.

Renegade Arts Entertainment is a Canadian publisher based in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. Focusing on comics, graphic novels, illustrated children's books and audiobooks, Renegade’s stories are in diverse genres from diverse voices.

Bedside Press is a Canadian publisher, based in Winnipeg, and known as a publisher of graphic novel and prose projects including the best-selling The Secret Loves of Geek Girls.

Hope Nicholson, owner of Bedside Press: “I’m very excited that Renegade is taking this chance on us. As a small publisher, distribution to bookstores and libraries is essential, and I’m glad that we are able to reach the audience for our books worldwide! Prairie publishers supporting each other is very important to me, and I’m looking forward to what the next few years brings. Renegade has a reputation for excellence and I couldn’t be more pleased with this opportunity.”

Alexander Finbow, EIC at Renegade: “Bedside Press has published impressive and important books, often taking a chance on titles that other publishers are too risk adverse to champion. Hope is committed to finding more great stories, and I am really happy to welcome her to the Renegade publishing family to help make Bedside’s books available to more readers.”

To Better Know a Renegade: Spencer Estabrooks

Sean Tonelli - Wednesday, October 11, 2017

Remember that scene in Hudson Hawk when Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello robbed a museum while singing Bing Crosby? How cool was that? Mid-nineties Bruce Willis is my favourite. Anyway, welcome to another off the hook installment of… (drum roll)...

To Better Know a Renegade!  Featuring Spencer Estabrooks, an Alberta writer and film director. With a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies at the University of Alberta and a diploma in film production at the Victoria Motion Picture School, Spencer focuses on telling Alberta genre stories. His #OGN Sharkasaurus debuts April 23rd, 2018 at Renegade. So be sure to mark the date in your new fangled Apple Calendar. Go ahead… I’ll wait...

Sean: How did you get started as an artist?

Spencer: I have a background in film. I've always been writing and directing crazy genre stories. Everything from a zombie westerns to sword and sorcery mockumentaries. I've been really inspired by comics lately. I feel they can give me the freedom to really explore some of the stranger and more eccentric ideas that have been rattling around in my brain.

Sean: Who-- Whom?-- No, WHO are some of your inspirations?

Spencer: I get inspired by other writers like Tim Powers, Ed Erdelac, Neil Gaiman, and Jonathan Lethem. Films by Sam Rami, Guillermo Del Toro, and early Peter Jackson are also big influences. Comics, I tend to like Sergio Aragones and Alan Moore. I think anyone that is telling a good story with and interesting historical/fantastical/magical twist.

Sean: What are some secrets to your creative process?

Spencer: Trying to write everyday. It's hard if you're working a 9-5 job because nobody wants to work after working. So I started writing regularly before work. About an hour everyday, but it adds up over a week. Then over a month. It's fantastic, the progress you can make.

Sean: Any upcoming projects that you would like to tell readers about?

Spencer: The big one is Sharkasaurus. My first graphic novel. It's a great little beastie for the Trump era full of crazy kills, flat earth's, and set on a creationist themed golf course.

Sean: What are some of your favourite tools for being so creatively awesome?

Spencer: Coffee is my number 1 favourite tool for work.

Sean: Advice for up and comers/bitter rivals?

Spencer: Keep working and focus on finishing. Finishing projects is the best way to stay motivated, build momentum.

You can find more of Spencer’s work HERE. Sharkasaurus arrives 2018-04-23 so save the date!

RENEGADE RETURNS TO TORONTO FAN EXPO

Sean Tonelli - Sunday, August 27, 2017

Has it been a year? (looks at watch-- oh I don’t wear a watch-- checks phone) YUP! It’s been a whole year since the last Toronto Fan Expo and to be honest, we are still recovering. 2017 has been a big year so far for us and we can’t wait to share all our amazing efforts with our East coast friends.

The big news this year? John Bolton will be making a rare appearance. That’s right Shame artist John Bolton is making his way to Toronto. As an added bonus, John will be offering a free sketch to all who purchase the Shame trilogy hardcover. Now that’s incentive.

We wouldn’t leave John all by his lonesome though. Shame author Lovern Kindzierski joins us. That’s right, both John and Lovern at the same place at the same time. And that’s not all. A Shame creator spotlight will be held Saturday, September 2nd at 13:30 ET in room 715B. You do not want to miss that.

Hot on the heels of their ‘beary’ big release, When Big Bears Invade author Alexander Finbow and artist Nyco Rudolph will be donning their Sunday best all weekend. You can catch Alexander at the Renegade booth while Nyco will be just down the way at table P104.

Did you miss one of our many Bears & Beers reading across the country this summer? No fear, Alexander and Nyco will be performing a live reading on Saturday, September 2 at 14:00 ET.

Be sure to grab the Fan Expo app, but if you have one of those printer-dealies feel free to print the map below. Hope to see you soon!
