  • Adapted from the graphic novel by Oscar nominated Hollywood screenwriter Tab Murphy, the school play presents an opportunity for students to bring history to life. Written with Grade 7 age students and above in mind, the play features the characters from the graphic novel, the Loxleys and the historical figures involved in key events from the war. It offers a great way to help students immerse themselves in this important chapter in Canadian history and also involve their local community in recreating the Canada of 200 years ago.

    Excerpt:

Aaron sets his fiddle down and starts to walk away.

Eliza: Aaron! Where are you going?

Aaron: To pack my belongings. I’m off to fight the Americans.

Eliza: Aaron Loxley! You lost your own father in a war. Will you put your children through the same misery?

Aaron: I do not want to fight, Eliza. But sometimes a man must fight for what he believes in. I believe in this family. And I believe in this land. And that is why I must go.

Matthew: It is absurd! How can you even think of fighting our neighbors across the Niagara? We trade with them each week. They are our friends!

William: Is Matthew not right, father? What difference does it make whether we are ruled by a King or a President? We farm the land, whoever rules us.

Aaron: The land we farm is our land. Canadian
