The true story of Robbie Burns

Alexander Finbow - Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Looking back through my emails, I see that it was a little over 3 years ago when Gordon and Emma first pitched their idea for the graphic novel Robbie Burns: Witch Hunter to me. Their pitch was very good, the kind of idea that makes you wonder why no one has written it before. There is always the risk that a good idea can be lost along the creative process way, delivering something that doesn't live up to the promise originally offered. Of course, the track record of the writers coupled with Tiernen Trevallion's artwork, made this a fairly safe bet. Now, looking at the hardcover book in my hands, I am really happy to tell you that it more than lives up to the original promise, I would go as far to say that it has surpassed my hopes. Robbie Burns: Witch Hunter is a great story, beautifully told.

On Monday, November 24th we will be launching the book with the National Trust of Scotland at the Robbert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, Scotland. At 3pm inside the cottage where Robbie Burns himself was born, Gordon Rennie, Emma Beeby and Tiernen Trevallion will talk about the book, answering pertinent and wise questions before signing the first copies to go on sale in the UK. It promises to be a lively affair with an interesting mix of scholars, comic book professionals and Burns aficionados on the guest list.

If you would like to join the fun, email Chris Waddell, who is hosting the event for the National Trust at cwaddell@nts.org.uk to let him know you're coming.

Reviews are starting to trickle in, like this 4/5 star review from David Pollock at The LIST 'A fast-paced slice of of frantic imagination.' And from Rob Alexander at the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper 'With its fantastic art, exceptional writing and unique take on such a well known figure, I'd say Robbie Burns: Witch Hunter is one of Renegade’s best titles so far.'

For those not fortunate enough to make it to Alloway on Monday, perhaps we might see you at the Lethbridge Expo? I'll be there as a guest  alongside cartoonist Jeff Martin and living legend Claude St. Aubin. We'll have a preview release of Robbie Burns: Witch Hunter for attendees ahead of the official release on Wednesday November 26th. We'll also be running the popular panel 'Get Published or Die Trying Part 3' on Saturday at 3.15pm. Secrets, numbers and advice on routes to start your comic book career going will be offered along with prizes for the best elevator pitch.
